These electric-blue bodies of water (not quite lakes) just a couple of km south west of Moab, UT juxtaposed against the red, rocky landscape. They are known as Potash Ponds. These man-made ponds are for collecting potash, a potassium-containing salt used in farm fertilizers. Workers pump the potash from way below the Earth’s surface into the ground-level ponds, where the sun evaporates the pond water and leaves potash behind.
.
The water is artificially dyed a blue colour in order to absorb heat, and therefore evaporate more quickly (the process takes just under a year).
